Geography of the British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are a British Territoire of overseas being part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands and which gathers the part is archipelago. The territory is composed of forty islands, from which 16 are inhabited.

General information

Except for the island of Anegada, the British Virgin Islands are origins volcanic and thus rather mountainous with steep slopes. The highest point is the Wise Mount, which culminates with 521 meters. The ground on all the islands is rather poor, consisting most of the time of brown fatty ground of volcanic origin.

The island of Anegada is geologically distinct from the other islands, because it is about an island coralliene made up of limestone.

The largest island of the territory is Tortola, which makes approximately 56 km ².

Climate

The climate of the British Virgin Islands is subtropical with one rain season going from May to November. The rain falls there then in short but strong downpours. Pluviometry is about 1250 millimetres per annum.

The temperatures are relativements stable, energy of 26°C with 31°C in summer and 20°C with 28°C in winter. The Alizés blow constamments, of the North-East in winter and south-east in summer.

The seasons of the Ouragan S begins in June and finishes in November.
