Geography of Lebanon

The Lebanon is a country of the the Middle East of 10.452 km ² of surface. It has a border with Israel in the south and the Syria in the east and north. Also Lebanon is bordered in the West by the Mediterranean.

A narrow coastal strip is strongly urbanized; she extends from Tyr in the south with Tripoli in north while passing by Sidon, Beirut, Jounieh and Byblos.

In the east, the plain of the Bekaa, at an average altitude of 900 meters, is tightened between the mountains of the Lebanon and the Anti Lebanon.

Resources

Natural resources: Calcareous, Iron ore, salt, Water.

Exploitation of the ground:

  • arable lands: 21%
  • permanent crops: 9%
  • permanent pastures: 1%
  • forests: 8% (are. 1993)

environmental Problems: Deforestation, erosion, Turning into a desert, air pollution with Beyrout, coastal water pollution.

Natural disasters: sandstorms.

International treaties on the environment:

  • Left with: biodiversity, climate changes, turning into a desert, right of the sea, prohibition of the nuclear tests, protection of the layer of ozone, maritime pollution, wetlands.
  • Signed, but not ratified: safeguarding of the sea life.
