Geology

The Armorican solid mass extends partly on Basse-Normandie and its culminating point is close to Alençon: the Signal of Ecouves (417 m). The Armorican watersheds are roughly directed East-West and consist of " sandstone armoricain" (quarzite) very hard. These layers were deformed by crumpling hercynien. There is thus, of north in the south a succession of anticlines and synclinal: synclinal of May-on-Flowering ash, Urville, zone bocaine and anticline of Ecouves. The zone bocaine is synclinal longest (of Granville to Turn-on-Divine while passing by Falaise) and also the most visible. Beyond (towards the east) it continues under limestones the Jurassic layers of the Paris basin. This Paris basin consists of sub-horizontal layers, therefore not folded, because deposited after the period hercynienne and because the folding of the Alps has not very affected the North-West of France. The Jurassic Low Norman relates to Bessin, the plate of Caen - Nickel silver - Sées; he is very favourable with the cereal cultures, contrary to the Armorican part where forests and meadows alternate.
