Geography of Angola

The Angola is a country located between 4°22 and 18°03 of southern latitude and 11°41 and 24°05 of longitude is in the south-west of the African continent, it roughly has the form of a square of 1300 side kilometers. The total surface area is of 1.246.700 square kilometers including the enclave of Cabinda.

It is surrounded in north of the Congo (Brazzaville) and in the North-East of the Democratic republic of Congo (Kinshasa), in the south-east of the Zambia, the south of the Namibia and the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The border measures nearly 4700 kilometers and the dimension 1620 kilometers. Its capital is Luanda.

Relief

Starting from a narrow coastal strip whose width varies between 19,5 and 184 kilometers, the relief rises quickly to reach a plate which goes down then gently towards the center from Africa.

Two thirds of the country are covered with plates whose altitude lies between 450 and 600 meters.

The Angolan plate or plate of Bié form a quadrilateral in the east of Benguela of average altitude of 1500 meters with extremes with 2200 meters. This plate covers approximately 10  % of the surface of the country. The Malanje in the north of the country is less vast and less low while the Huíla is smaller but of a larger average altitude. The culminating point of the country is Morro de Moco, which reaches 2620 meters.

Climate

It is primarily tropical with one rain season from November to April, semi-arid in the south and along the coast.
