Geographical ascription

A global area network called Origin was created with Geneva, in June 2002, to extend the protection of the geographical ascriptions to other products that the wines and the spirits. Producers of a score of country were present to launch the new organization Origin (Organization for International year Geographical Indications Network).

This network joins together various countries developed or not. Creation within OMC of a multilateral repertory of protected high-class products, that they are cheeses, pork-butchery, meat, fruits (pineapple, bananas), of cereals (corn, rye), of rice, the or peppers, honey or silk, is a simple solution and economic. But, for the moment only the wines and spirits are protected within the framework from the agreements from OMC on the intellectual property (TRIPS or ADPIC).

Negotiations on protection

The group of Cairns of the principal exporting countries of agricultural produce and the the United States are opposed to an extension of the protection of the geographical ascriptions. Some hope to integrate IG (Geographical ascriptions) in a bargaining with the agricultural grants, others consider that the defense of the marks constitute a new form of protectionism.
