Geodetic Union and international geophysics
The Geodetic and Geophysical Union International (UGGI) is a scientific organization which supports and coordinates interdisciplinary studies of the Earth and its space environment within an international framework. The data of observation and the theoretical results obtained within the framework of the studies made under the auspices of the UGGI are, in theory, available openly at all the scientific community, with an aim of being used with the profit of whole humanity. The official languages of the UGGI are French and English, the latter having become, of course, the language dominant (and often exclusive) to communicate at the time of the ré scientific unions organized by the UGGI. The English initials are IUGG, for International Union off Geodesy and Geophysics . All the countries which developed a certain “independent activity in geodesy and geophysics” can adhere to the UGGI through a national committee.
The UGGI is made up of seven International associations and a certain number of Commissions of the Union (currently four) which allow him to act in various fields of sciences of the Earth and to encourage the interdisciplinary aspects especially. Associations of the Union are the following ones:
- International association of Geodesy (AIG); - International association of Geomagnetism and Aéronomie (AIGA); - International association of Hydrological Sciences (AISH); - International association of Meteorology and Sciences of the Atmosphere (AIMSA); - International association of Physical sciences of the Ocean (AISPO); - International association of Seismology and Physics of the Interior of the Earth (AISPIT); - International association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Interior of the Earth (AIVCIT).
The four currently active Commissions of the Union are:
- Commission on Sciences Cryosphériques (CCS); - Commission on the Geophysics Risks and Sustainable development (GeoRisk); - Commission on Mathematical Geophysics (CMG); - Commission on the Study Terrestrial Depths (SEDI).
