Geodetic Arc of Struve

The geodetic Arc of Struve is a chain of geodetic reference marks of Triangulation, which crosses the Europe of Hammerfest in Norway until the Black Sea, crossing ten countries on more 2  800  Kilomètre S. This chain was carried out and used by the Russian scientist German-speaking Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve between 1816 and 1855 to measure the size and the exact form of the Ground. At the time of construction, only two countries were concerned: the Sweden-Norway and the Russia (which had at the time sovereignty on independent territories from now on).

In 2005, the geodetic Arc of Struve was registered on the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO.

The arc was made up in the beginning of 258 triangles and 265 principal fixed points. The site registered on the list includes/understands 34 of the fixed points of origin and their various markings, such of the holes bored in the rock, the iron crosses, the cairns or the obelisks.
