Gentius
Gentius , which reigned of -180 with - 168, was the last king of Illyrie. He was the son of the king Pleuratus II, of the tribe of Labéates. He had his capital with Scodra.
In -180 Dalmatiens were freed from its domination. In -171, it was combined to the Romans against the Macedonians, but into -169 it changed camp to be combined with Persée of Macedonia. It stopped two Roman legates and destroyed the towns of Apollonia and Dyrrhachium, which was allied of Rome. In -168 it was overcome in Scodra by a Roman army under the orders of Lucius Anicius Gallus and into -167 taken along to Rome like prisoner to take part in the triumph of Gallus, after which it was imprisoned with Iguvium. One is unaware of the date of his death.
The yellow Gentian, and by extension the Gentian, car its name of him, according to Pline Old the because he would have discovered the healing virtues of the plant.
Gentius is represented on the reverse of the Albanian part of 50 Lek.
Its name seems derived from the common Indo-European *g' of “to generate”, related with Latin people, gentis “the family, the clan, the race”. In the communist Albania (of years 1950 at the years 1980), the names illyriens were encouraged in the idea to reinforce a feeling of Albanian nationalism, so that it is currently about a name enough running, in the shapes of Gentian, Gent or Genti.
