History

If the site of the town of Gentilly gave place only to few archaeological discoveries concerning the prehistoric period (some objects found at the 19th century), it presents nevertheless a concordant beam of indices, making it possible to prejudge a strong occupation as of the Neolithic : the valley of the Beaver as a whole, is indeed very prolific in sites of this era, and the occupation of the site by the Romans (an aqueduct), then the mérovingiens (a " vicus" , i.e. a large borough) attests of its interest.

The place is quoted for the first time at the 6th century like royal property, but it is only at the end of the 13th century that one saw appearing the denomination " Gentilly". Cities at this same time, a castle of the " type; motte" and a round tower, then a square tower in an enclosure attested relative richness of the place to the low Middle Ages. Richness confirmed by the presence of a mill, a furnace, a press, and careers. During all Middle Ages, the territory was divided between the hands of several abbeys and a seigniory, and often changed owner.

The 17th century saw the creation of the aqueduct Médicis, charged to feed out of water left bank of Paris. This last, preserved still perfectly, walks on via Fresnes, the Haÿ-the-Pinks, Cachan, Arcueil and Gentilly. The most outstanding work, the aqueduct bridge located at the southern limit of Arcueil, is used still today for the aqueduct of the Valve, which passes then under a quay level in extreme cases between Gentilly and Montrouge before joining Paris.

The 19th century saw the appearance of a strong industrial activity, established along the Bièvre. Industries of laundry and tannery developed very quickly. They perdurèrent until worms 1930 for the first, and 1970 for the seconds.

Following the industrialization and the very fast urbanization of the commune at the 19th century, the built habitat was of poor quality, and the Bièvre was extremely polluted (at the point to involve its cover with Paris in 1860 for reasons of hygiene). Until the second world war, the living conditions of the working population had remained disastrous, so much so that the three quarters of the population lived in unsanitary housings. Years 1950 saw the appearance of modern social housing, which involved a vertical thickening of housing in all the city, except for a district suburban, known as " Mazagran" plate; , located at the limit of Montrouge: it was more recently occupied in the history of the city (1890, creation of the line of train of Seals).

The middle of the 20th century also saw developing activities of metallurgy, food, building, printing works and manufacture of drugs.

The current period (end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21e century) an increased transformation of the activity sees towards the tertiary field, in particular the audio-visual communication. The principal employer of Gentilly nowadays remains the drug company, the activity of manufacture however being carried out on the spot.

Evolution in the time of the geographical limits

In a chart of 1773, known as " Chart of the chasses" one can note that the parish of Gentilly had a surface approximately four times more important than the current commune. The evolutions were the following ones:

January 1st, 1860 the districts White House and Glacière were attached to Paris.

Into 1897, Gentilly was divided between Gentilly and the Kremlin-Bicêtre, which became two distinct communes.

In 1925, the glacis of old the fortifications, known as " the Zone " was attached to Paris, accompanied that some pieces to increase the university residence.
