Genilac results from the fusion-association of 2 communes in 1973:
- Saint-Genis-Terrenoire (which gave GENI)
- Cula (which makes the LAKE).
The commune of Cula had been created with the French revolution whereas that of Saint-Genis-Terrenoire corresponded to old a Seigneurie of the Lyonnais.
The Terrenoire term is explained by the presence of many mines of coal exploited until the beginning of the 20th century.
