Generation of 1880
The expression generation of 1880 ( Generación LED '80 ) indicates in Argentine the controlling elite of the period 1880-1916. Its members, resulting from oligarchy, gathered first of all in the Ligue of controlling the, then within the Parti national separatist, which amalgamated the political clouts of the previous period.
They held the principal functions of command political, economic, military and religious, being maintained with the capacity mainly thanks to the electoral fraud. In spite of the increasing opposition of the radical civic Union and anarchistic and socialist movements formed by the immigrant workmen, they exerted the almost despotic power of way during more than three decades, until the promulgation of the law Sáenz Peña on the vote for all, obligatory and secret, which marks the beginning of the transition towards the contemporary Argentinian political system.
