General elections in India, 2004
The legislative elections took place in India, the greatest democracy of the world, in four phases, of the April 20th to the May 10th 2004. More than 670 million voters had to elect 543 members of the 14th Lok Sabha (the House of the People, the Lower House of the Parlement of India). The candidates were introduced by 220 political parties, some of national importance, the other local one. The May 13rd, the Bharatiya Janata Party with the capacity recognizes its defeat after an unexpected good score of the Parti the Congress national Indian. This last thus has to form a new government. The leader of the Congress, Sonia Gandhi, is leading the most important party in the new Parliament with 145 seats. It gives up however the post of Prime Minister under the pressure of the nationalist parties. It is Manmohan Singh which is elected with this function on May 22nd, 2004.

There is a maximum of 545 deputies at the Parliament: 543 elected officials and two who can be named by the President to represent the community anglo-Indian. The results were cancelled in four districts due to irregularities. The results in the other districts are the following (the parties recognized by the Electoral commission as being national parties are put in italics, the others being regional parties, or represented in one only country bets).
