General election britanno-Colombian of 2001
The general election britanno-Colombian of 2001 was started the April 18th 2001 and was held the May 16th in order to elect the Député S of the 37e legislature to the legislative Assemblée of the Colombia-British. It is about the 37e general election since the adhesion of the Colombia-British to the Canadian Confédération as a 6th province of the Canada in 1871. The Liberal party of the Colombia-British, directed by Gordon Campbell, raid all the seats with the legislative Parliament except two, and forms a majority Gouvernement.
Context
The government of the Noueau Democratic party had been shaken by the scandal which had led to the resignation of the néo-democrat chief and Prime Minister Glen Clark. Clark was replaced by Ujjal Dosanjh, a respected politician; however, Dosanjh does not succeed in regilding the blazon of the party.
The British Columbia Unity Party had been created as a fusion of various right parties. At the beginning, the Left reformist, the Left social Credit, the Party britanno-Colombian and the Party of the coalition of the families had been grouped under the banner of Unity Party. However, at the time of the release of the election, only the Coalition of the families and a strong majority of the members of the Party reformist still remained in the coalition. The other parties had withdrawn all to continue independently. Ron Gamble, chief and president of the Party reformist, continue his opposition to any fusion of the right parties until the possible collapse of Unity Party in 2004 after the failure of a second attempt at fusion with the Conservative party.
These events contribute largely to the victory of the Liberal party, which is a true tidal wave: directed by Gordon Campbell, a former mayor of Vancouver, the party gains more than 57% of the popular vote and 77 seats out of 79 with the legislative Parliament. The government néo-democrat is heavily demolishes, losing about half of its share of the popular vote since the preceding election and keeping only 2 seats with the Parliament, an insufficient number for the official statute of recognized party whose limit is fixed at 4. Ujjal Dosanjh is itself demolishes in its district, and resigns as a chief of the party shortly after the election.
