General election albertaine of 1905

The general election albertaine of 1905 was the first general election in the province of the Alberta (Canada). It is held the November 9th 1905 to elect the Député S of the 1e legislature to the legislative Assemblée of Alberta shortly after the creation of the province starting from the Territoires of the North-West on September 1st, 1905.

The Liberal party of Alberta directed by Alexander Cameron Rutherford gains 23 of the 25 seats at the new assembly, demolishing the Conservative party directed by the young lawyer Richard Bedford Bennett, who would become later Prime Minister of Canada.

Context

Before the election of 1905 the two political parties see several changes and defections. Good number of former deputies liberals-conervateurs make defection towards the liberals when Wilfrid Laurier names the provisional liberal government before the election. The conservatives do not have any strong chief to which to join since Frederick Haultain had settled in Saskatchewan.

The election of 1905 is bitter, especially with Calgary and in the south of Alberta, where the liberals are accused of electoral fraud and to intimidate the preserving voters. Legal examinations, especially in Calgary, last nearly one month and the results change constantly. The scandal leads to the arrest of several important liberal organizers, of which the campaign director of William Cushing who was scrutinizing with the one of the stations of poll.
