General election Newfoundlander of 2007

The general election Newfoundlander of 2007 took place the October 9th 2007 in order to elect the Député S with the Chambre of Parliament of the province of Ground-New-and-Labrador (Canada).

Context

The Prime Minister Danny Williams aspired to a second mandate for his Parti progressist-conservative, which formed a majority Gouvernement. He dealt with two principal parties of opposition: the Liberal party, directed by the chief of the Official opposition Gerry Reid, and the New Democratic party, directed by Lorraine Michael.

It was the first election on fixed date in Ground-New-and-Labrador. Previously, as in the majority of the other political regimes functioning according to the System of Westminster, the release of elections was with the discretion of the Prime Minister, who could wait up to five years after an election before requesting the dissolution of the legislature and the release of elections from the Lieutenant-governor (at the end 5 years, the legislature was automatically dissolved and a started election). However, the electoral law of Ground-New-and-Labrador ( House off Assembly Act ) was repealed and a new law carrying this title was promulgated, which stipulates now that the elections must take place second Tuesday of October in the fourth year following the preceding election.

Results

Without much surprise, the very popular Williams Prime Minister, extremely from his war of words with the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen To grip, obtained a final victory. The liberals lost several seats, falling with three seats, their chief Gerry Reid losing in his county of The Isles off Notre Dame. The NPD arrived, through a campaign with restricted means, to retain the seat of its chief Lorraine Michael, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi in the capital, without being able to make other profits.

In the county of Large Falls-Buchans, the death of the liberal candidate Gerry Tobin obliged the carryforward of the election until a latter date, when it was gained by the conservative candidate Susan Sullivan. In the county of Bonavista South, the candidate Clayton Hobbs withdrew himself for health reasons; its preserving adversary, the outgoing deputy Roger Fitzgerald, thus gained by acclamation.
