General Marshal of the camps and armies of the king
The load of “ general marshal of the camps and armies of the king ” is a French warhead of the Ancien Mode. Its holder had authority on all the others Marshals of France. Initially created to compensate for the Constable when this one was inalienable, it became after the suppression of the connétablie in 1627 the highest dignity of the army. One counts in all only six holders:

- 1621: François de Bonne, duke of Lesdiguières (1543 - 1626), which became thereafter constable
- 1660: Turenne (1611 - 1675)
- 1733: Charles Louis Hector de Villars (1653 - 1734)
- 1747: Maurice of Saxony (1696 - 1750)
- 1847: Nicolas Jean-of-God Soult, duke of Dalmatie (1769-1851)
