General Dynamics is a company of design of military aircrafts on behalf of the US government founded in 1952. One owes him the construction of the famous plane F-16 Fighting Falcon or the F-111 Raven. Currently, these planes are developed by Lockheed Martin which repurchased in 1993 the creative company of these apparatuses.

History

The origin of this company goes back to John P.Holland Torpedo Boat (High-speed motorboat launches torpedes), who was famous Electric Boat Co in 1899. After the Second world war, Electric Boat (Specialized in the construction of ship and underwater) was without order but with an impressive cash-flow. Its president thus sought a means of divertifier.

Beginnings in aeronautics

After research, John Jay Hopkins chair of Electric Boat, found that the co. Canadair (held at the time by the Canadian government) was to be sold. The transaction was concluded in 1946 for a sum from 10 Million from Dollars.

After a deep reorganization, in particular of the production lines, Tanker plane, joined again with the profits and delivered even its apparatus North Star (a Version under license of DC-4) in advance compared to the initial calendar.

It should be noted that Canadair was resold with the Canadian Government in 1976.

Birth of General Dynamics

With the repurchase of Tanker plane, the production of plane increased more strongly than the production of boat. John Jay Hopkins, found that the name of Electic Boat could not represent the company any more. April 24th, 1952 the name was officially changed for General Electric.

Having always enormously Cash-flow, General Dynamics repurchases Convair in 1953.
