General

The general term indicates a row raised in a hierarchical organization.

Soldier

In the military field, general is a rank for a general Officier being registered at the top of the hierarchy Militaire, after the senior officers (Commander/Major, Colonel), the Subalterns (lieutenant, Capitaine), the Sous-officier S and the soldiers of the row.

The general orders a unit broader than a Régiment: Brigade, Division, Army corps or Armed. In general, one specifies the unit in the rank: , Brigadier general Major general, General Lieutenant-general of army or . In the majority of the countries, these various ranks are represented by the numbers of stars associated with the rank with general.

With the Canada, the general rank of has as an abbreviation “Gén”.

France

In France, each row corresponds to a certain number of stars. The distinctive signs of the ranks are:
  • brigade: 2 stars;
  • division: 3 stars;
  • army corps: 4 stars;
  • armed: 5 stars.
Although officially there exist only two ranks in the body of the general officers, that of Brigadier general and that of Major general, then the major generals are " raised with the row and appellation" of lieutenant-generals of army then of army, since a decree of the June 7th 1939.

The United States

In the US Army, the US Marine Body and the US Air Force, the rank of Général is higher than that of Lieutenant-general. An American general is as called a Général four stars because of the badge as it carries.

General is the equivalent of Admiral in the US Navy. A general directs all the operations of his weapon being in the geographical area under his command. The Chief off Staff off the United States Army and the Ordering off the Marine Body are generals four stars.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, a General is named only in the event of war. If such is the case, it is the commander of body, i.e. the chief of the army which is named. In normal weather, the commander of body is the officer who is with the head of the Swiss army.
