Genealogical company of Utah
The genealogical Société of Utah is an emanation of the Église of Jesus-Christ of the Saints of the Last Days which is known for its interest for the genealogy. This interest is caused by the will of each one to find its ancestors and to enable them to receive the blessings of the Gospel. This will justified the invention of the standard GEDCOM and it search for old acts, in particular thanks to the technology of the Microfilm.
History
The genealogical Company of Utah was created on November 13rd, 1894. Its goal was to collect, compile, establish and maintain a genealogical library with the use of all, and to disseminate information concerning the genealogical subjects. In 1939, the Company entered the world of the microfilm to obtain documents and registers hitherto inaccessible. The first large collection was composed of photographic reproductions of transcription typed of the majority of the old registers of county of the State of Tennessee. Thereafter the program of microfilming was extended to the remainder of the United States and the world. After the Second world war, the photographic operations were extended to the United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, certain parts of Italy, Germany, the Scandinavian Countries and Finland.
Safe deposits
In December 1972, the Genealogical Company had 756.062 reels of microfilms of 30 meters, that is to say a total of 22.681.860 meters, which is the equivalent of more than 3.607.002 volumes of 300 each one pages. There were in the rays of library 114.392 printed volumes. For the conservation of its documents, a series of giant safe deposits was dug in mountains of granite to some 35 kilometers of Salt Lake City. There is nearly 200 meters of massive granite above the six immense safe deposits which were dug on a depth of almost 150 meters in the heart of the granite. The natural temperature in the rooms of storage is throughout the year from 13 to 14 degrees and natural moisture is always from 40 to 50 percent. These conditions are perfect for the storage of microfilms.
France
In 1946, an agreement was concluded between the French company from the microfilm and the Church from Jesus-Christ from the Saints from the Last Days for the microfilming from the registers from civil statue. The October 28th 1960, an agreement had made between the direction of the Files of France and the genealogical Company of Salt Lake City. The June 29th 1987, this agreement was the subject of an endorsement which was approved by the decree of the September 28th 1987 diffused with the Official journal of the November 20th 1987.
Terms of the agreement with the Files of France
The genealogical Company of Utah carries out the microfilming of the parochial registers and civil statue of more than one hundred years of age preserved in the services of French public records, in order to protect these documents and to put them in free consultation in its network of libraries. The essential goal of the microfilming carried out by the genealogical Company of Utah is to make it possible its members to identify their ancestors in order to manage to them in their temple S of the religious rites in agreement with the doctrines of the Church of Jesus-Christ of the Saints of the Last Days. The genealogical Company of Utah is seen granting the right of access and of copy in exchange of a specimen of the microfilm, conservation of the original microfilm in a underground shelter profiting from favorable conditions to its conservation, of the exemption from payment, for the services of French files, of the services of the personnel of safety of the underground shelter and the supply, on request of the services of French files, additional films or replacement.
