Gene marker

A gene marker or gene rapporteur is a gene which one adds with a genetic construction in order to better detect the events of genetic transformation.

The genes markers can be genes of selection (gene of resistance to a Antibiotique (ex Kanamycine)) or a gene changing a character, locatable with the naked eye such as for example the use of:

  • the Bioluminescence with:
  • Gene GUS, coding an enzyme (beta-glucoronidase) which colors in blue the cells where it is active, but it is lethal
  • of a gene modifying the color of the eyes in the drosophila, the Gène white,

The genes markers must obey in 3 conditions:

  • to be foreign with the genome of the organization modified so that their product does not intervene in the metabolism
  • their product must allow a fast visualization and specifies in order to determine in which fabric gene modified
  • their product acts must be quantifiable in order to measure the activity of the promoter inducing the modification.
