Gendarmerie of Vaud

The Gendarmerie of Vaud is a body of police force made up in charge of protection of the people and goods on the unit with the territory with the Canton with Vaud in fields as varied as the police force with circulation, the police force of navigation, the police force of order and the judicial police.

The gendarmes of Vaud are active as much in the urban areas that rural. They have all the jurisdictions on the whole of the territory and are under the orders of the government of Vaud, the Council of State.

The Gendarmerie ensures of many missions:

  • To supervise, prevent, intervene 24 hours a day on the whole of the territory in fields as varied as the police force of circulation, the police force of navigation and the police force of order;
  • To exert, only or in collaboration with the police force of safety, the judicial police;
  • To achieve administrative tasks.

History

The French revolution (1789) and the time of the Lumières strongly modified the concept of the Human rights. The Vaudois thus rise against the despotism Bernese, helped in that by the rupture of the political and military balance of the France and the Austria. Also pushed by various personalities of the time, the Of Vaud ones react and provide the foundations of a state, the lemanic République before Napoleon n´impose l´ Acte of mediation on February 19th, 1803. June 4th, 1803, the government creates by a law the first body of 100 gendarmes to foot, made up mainly the of Vaud one having fought in the Napoleonean armies and whose first missions are:
  • hunting for the deserters
  • tolls with the road axes
  • Control of the cantonal borders
  • the order inside the country
  • the arrests
  • Transfers of the prisoners
  • Administrative tasks

Since 1803, the gendarmerie n´a ceased evolving/moving and adapting to the new forms of criminality and the challenges of our modern environment in constant evolution. Today, the main mission is the protection of the people and the goods. However, the body of the gendarmerie adapted during the decades to the evolution of the company and ensures a great number in connection with public safety on the unit of the territory of Vaud.

Principal dates

  • June 4th, 1803: creation of a company of 100 gendarmes to foot
  • June 8th, 1809: increase in manpower with 150 men
  • October 1926: appearance of the first drivers of dog
  • be 1930: creation of the brigades of circulation
  • December 1936: creation of a gendarmerie with horse, removed in 1946
  • October 1953: creation of the school brigade
  • August 4th, 1962: creation of the brigade of the lake, with Ouchy
  • May 27th, 1963: 1e highway brigade on the axis Geneva - Lausanne
  • 1988: creation of the legal groups
  • March 1st, 1997: appearance of the first managers of safety
  • 1998: engagement of the first women gendarmes
  • June 4th, 2002: creation of the association for the history of the gendarmerie of Vaud
  • June 4th, 2003: celebration of the bicentenary of the gendarmerie of Vaud
  • June 1st, 2006: opening of the museum of the gendarmerie of Vaud

Organization

The cantonal police force is under the official control of the Department of the safety and the environment (Of) of the canton of Vaud. it is made up of 3 distinct bodies.
  • gendarmerie, made up of 550 gendarmes in uniform
  • the police force of safety, made up 216 inspectors as a civilian in charge of the investigations average and serious crime, financial brigade and the drug squad, vice quad.
  • the service generals, made up 84 police officers in load of the total management of the system (human resources, data processing)
The Gendarmerie of Vaud is the only police force in uniform entitled to treat all the tasks of judicial police on the whole of the cantonal territory. She also takes part in missions of service of order out of the cantonal border at the time of particular demonstrations (World Economic Forum with Davos, G8 with Evian, Eurofoot 2008).

She is strongly established and decentralized in the canton with 4 areas d´intervention: the area Lausanne, the Northern area, the Western area East and area. In these areas, several entities of gendarmerie are present:

  • 33 stations of gendarmerie
  • 2 brigades of the lake (Lake Léman and Neuchâtel Lake)
  • 4 CIR (regional Center of intervention)
  • 1 group of intervention (DART - fast Detachment of action and dissuasion)
  • specialized Units (Blécherette Center in Lausanne)
