Gendarmería de Chile

The Gendarmería de Chile is the Chilean body of the prison warders.

History

This service is institutionalized in 1843, under the presidency of Manuel Bulnes, which creates the Penitenciaría of Santiago, first professional prison, founded under the ideology of the Panoptique. In 1871 it is separated from Ejército (the Army), under the name of Guardia Especial charged with keeping the prisons.

In 1927 it amalgamates with the police forces of the country (the Carabineros de Chile), becoming thus the Servicio de Prisiones . However, it is necessary to await 1929 so that the service specializes and is modernized with the creation of the Escuela de Prisiones (the school of the prisons, famous Escuela Técnica de Prisiones in 1954 and Escuela de Gendarmería de Chile General Manual Bulnes in 1975).

Into 1975 the Servicio de Prisiones changes its name for current the Gendarmería and separates from the Carabineros de Chile. Since the law of 1979, it became a service of guarding of the prisons of Chile. In 1997 one created the Academia Superior de Estudios Penitenciarios (higher academy of penitentiary studies).
