Gekko gecko
The gecko tokay ( gekko gecko ) is one of largest the Gecko S existing with close to 35cm for the largest specimens.
It is large a night reptile , gray bluish with white points and regularly spaced reds, and of the outgrowths. It is a massive gecko, equipped with one powerful famous person to the jaw.
It is able to push a powerful cry when it is disturbed (at least with regard to the males).
Being easily reproduced in captivity, these geckos was sometimes used for hunting for the insects (cockroach S, cockroach S) in particular with New York (first half of the years 1900). This was fatal besides with the majority as of these geckos, the temperature, the hygroscopy and especially the presence of Insecticide in the preys having been right of them.
Geographical distribution
One finds mainly this gecko in Asia, in south-east (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Thailand, Kampuchea, Laos, Filipino Vietnam, Malaysia, China (southern), (islands), Indonesia, and it was introduced with the the United States and in Martinique).
Subspecies
Climatic parameters
This gecko with need for a relatively high Hygroscopy, about 70-80%, and bordering the 90-100% during the periods of Monsoon.
The temperatures go up until 30°C at the hottest spot the day, and fall between 20 and 25°C the night.
Breeding in captivity
The climate being wet (the Hygrométrie must approach the 80%), it is necessary to envisage a Terrarium equipped with imputrescibles decorations and quite ventilated (a low ventilation and one high in diagonal for a good air circulation). One carries out this by maintaining the wet Substrat and by regularly pulverizing water in terrarium.
The hot spot can be provided by a powerful lamp, but it is sometimes delicate to control the temperature with it mechanism or using a heating càble placed under the substrate and perhaps controlled using a thermostat. Attention to protect the accesses to the lamps, this gecko being able to climb on all surfaces, including with the ceiling.
Being night, a contribution of UV (ultraviolet) is not absolutely necessary but in spite of very recommended, a lamp or neon 5.0 is sufficient.
The terrarium must be furnished with many vertical branches and in diagonals.
Being equipped with a jaw powerful its bites, without being dangerous, can be very painful.
Caution: elements containing pines (barks, spines…) products emit which have a harmful effect on the respiratory system of these animals.
For food it accepts the majority of the insects of size adapted (cricket S, Criquet S, cockroach S…).
It can accept also small rodents from time to time (babies mouse or " rosée") or of small birds.
It should be known that the Sauriens nourish only alive preys.
The advantage of Mammifère S as food is that they very nutritive, are balanced and rich in Calcium (which helps to synthesize the Vitamine D 3).
The reproduction begins at the exit from the winter, which corresponds to a fall of approximately 5°C of the temperature.
Attention with dehydration, the small ones being very sensitive there.
Note : the adults are opportunist hunters which will not hesitate to eat the small ones. To always raise them newborns in a separated terrarium, to see each one in one minis-terrarium.
Food
This gecko is insectivorous and Carnivore. It consumes the majority of the Insecte S and Arthropode S of adapted size, and does not hesitate to consume small reptiles (of which at the time of its own species) or of small mammals like the souriceaux ones or small birds.
Behavior
The males are territorial and defend their territory sometimes violently, especially in period of reproduction
It can emit a characteristic cry, during the periods of reproduction or when it feels threatened.
Maturity
Normally these geckos is mature at the conclusion of their first year.
Sexage
The males have femoral pores (small points) in form of V to the top of the Cloaque. Moreover the male cry in a different way compared to the female.
Reproduction
The reproduction begins at the exit from the winter (excessively lenient where live these geckos).
Layings
The eggs are in general laid with the foot of the branches.
Incubation
The eggs incubate during approximately ten weeks with 28°C, with a hygroscopy of 70-80%.
The small ones
Identical to the adults, they have the same food, the size of the consumed preys being weaker.
