Gazeille

The Gazeille or Grazeille is a small French river which runs in Haute-Loire. It is an affluent of the the Loire out of Right Bank.

Geography

Gazeille is born in south-west from the Mézenc Mount, on the territory of Estables, very close to the limit with the department of Ardeche. It moves as of the beginning towards the west, direction which it more or less maintains throughout its course of 27 kilometers. It ends up being thrown in the Loire with Chadron. It has a catchment area of 104,4 km ² ().

Common crossings

In Haute-Loire: the river crosses the communes of Estables, Freycenet-the-Turn, It Monastier-on-Gazeille, Saint-Martin-with-Fugères and Chadron.

Hydrology

The flow of Gazeille was observed for one 35 years period (1946-1980), with It Monastier-on-Gazeille, locality of the department of Haute-Loire, located at about thirty kilometers of its confluence with the the Loire. The catchment area of the river is there of 83 km ² is 80% of its totality.

The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Monastier-on-Gazeille is of 1,56 m ³ a second.

Gazeille present of the seasonal fluctuations of medium flow, with one long period of high waters extending from the end of the autumn until spring and carrying the average flow monthly on a level located between 1,80 and 2,33 m ³ a second, from November to May included (maximum in March and April), and of low waters of summer from July to September included, with a fall of the monthly medium flow until 0,457 m ³ in August (457 liters a second), which is still very acceptable.

However, the VCN3 can fall until 0,079 m ³, in the event of dry period quinquennial, that is to say 79 liters a second, which becomes severe. The VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

In addition the risings can be rather important. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively 22 and 40 m ³. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is worth 51 m ³ a second, while the QIX 20 is assembled to 62 m ³. Finally the QIX 50 is assembled to 77 m ³ a second. (see note). The recorded maximum flow was of 125 m ³ a second on January 30th, 1956 By comparing this value with those of the various QIX of the river, it appears that this rising was much more than cinquantennale and thus completely exceptional.

The Lame of water past in the basin of Gazeille is of 593 millimetres annually, which is very high, much higher than the overall average of France, and of course also with that of the whole of the catchment area of the Loire (244 millimetres). The specific Débit (or Qsp) consequently assembles to solid 18,7 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
