Gavarnie

Gavarnie (in Gascon Occitan Gavarnia ) is a common French, located in the department of the Hautes-Pyrénées and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.

Geography

Located in the the Pyrenees, Gavarnie is a small village of mountain (approx. 1400 m of altitude) at the border with the Spain]. The Gave of Pau named here Gave de Gavarnie takes its source there, in the middle of the National park of the Pyrenees. It is the Grande high Cascade of its 422m. In 1997, the Massive of Mount-Lost to which belonged the Cirque of Gavarnie was classified with the World heritage of UNESCO to the double title of natural and cultural landscape.

The summer, the tourist activity beats full sound with nearly a million annual visitors. The day the tourists côtoient the mountain dwellers of passage. And the evening, only some benefit from the sunset on the circus.

The winter, the village takes again its mountain rate/rhythm. The Ski station Gavarnie-Gèdre which, profits at the same time from a strong snowing up (" naturel") and of a framework enchanter, attracts small and large. It is undoubtedly the best period to appreciate the beauty of the circus: papered of white.
