Gavan McCormack

Gavan McCormack is a Orientaliste specialized in the East Asia which is a professor invited to the faculty of social sciences to the International Christian University with Tokyo and was a long time professor with l' Australian National University .

Academic career

McCormack is bachelor of law and in letters (Law and Arts dismantles) university of Melbourne (1955-1959) and supplemented this formation by a control in history (1960-1962). In 1962-1963, McCormack was at the university of the foreign languages of Osaka, where it obtained a diploma in languages and Japanese culture. From 1963 to 1966, it successfully followed a Chinese course to the school of the African and Eastern studies of London, and continued, in the same school, a control in East Asia (1968-1969) followed by a doctorate (1969-1974) for which it produced a thesis entitled Chang Tso-flax, the incidental of Mukden and the Japan, 1920-1928: The development and relations between the lords of the Chinese war and the imperialism Japanese in the North-East of China . This thesis was published in the form of book.

Its academic career passed by the university of Leeds, at the university of Trobe (State of Victoria, Australia) and the university of Adelaide in South Australia. In 1990, he became Japanese professor with l' Australian National University .

The centers of interest of McCormack are related to its Marxist convictions , and it published in particular much on subjects related to the engagements of release in Southeast Asia. Among his writings, one notes, in 1979 and 1980, the publication of articles where it calls into question the existence of massacres to large scales in the Kampuchea of Pol Pot. More recently, it was interested in the environmental questions and hard criticized the Bush administration and the American policy. It estimates that the nuclear program of the North Korea is the answer to the nuclear intimidation which it underwent during decades on behalf of the United States.
