Gauge (architecture)
See also: Gauge
The gauge , in Architecture, indicates the size and the general form which a building according to the payments of town planning can take. The gauge is defined formally by a graph which indicates the straight lines or curves in which must fit constructions.
A gauge often breaks up into two parts:
- a height on street, which corresponds to the maximum height of the vertical frontage at the edge of the lane.
- a crowning, which defines the size and the form in which must fit the roofs. Crowning will have for example to fall under an angle with 45° or an arc of circle whose base is parallel to the frontage. The height about the middle of the piece can be limited or not.
One can also define the gauge to apply to two buildings built on both sides interior court.
