Gatineau

Gatineau is a Ville Quebec and the administrative center of the administrative area of the Outaouais. It is located on northern bank of the Rivière of Outaouais, in the east and the west of the river Gatineau, opposite the town of Ottawa. It gathers now the towns of Gatineau, Hull, Buckingham, Aylmer and Masson-Angers, amalgamated since January 1st 2002. In the agglomeration (Ottawa-Gatineau) the population reaches more 1  200  000 inhabitants. It is one of the main cities of the Quebec and belonged to the fourth agglomeration in importance (that of Ottawa) with the Canada after Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver

The name Gatineau comes from the Gastineau family, one of those having practiced the draft of the furs on this river with XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries.

Municipal chronology

  • July 1st 1855: The cantons of Hull , Templeton and Buckingham as well as the village of Aylmer and Buckingham are made up during the first municipal cutting of Quebec.

  • February 23rd 1875: The city of Hull is detached from the canton of Hull.
  • 1876 : The village of Point-with-Gatineau is detached from Templeton.
  • 1877 : The parish of the Angel-Guard is detached from the canton of Buckingham.

The towns of Point-Gatineau, Gatineau and Touraine, the cantons of Templeton-West, Templeton-Is and Templeton-Be-Part-Is as well as the village of Templeton are amalgamated to form the town of Gatineau . The towns of Buckingham and Masson, the municipality of Our-Lady-with-the-Salette , the cantons of Buckingham, Buckingham-Part-South-Is and Buckingham-Part-South-West, the parish of the Angel-Guard and the village of Angers are amalgamated to form the town of Buckingham .
  • January 1st 1975: Aylmer, Lucerne and Deschênes amalgamate to form the town of Aylmer .
  • May 17th 1979: Following popular pressures, the town of Masson and the municipalities of the Angel-Guard and Our-Lady-with-the-Salette are detached from Buckingham.
  • January 1st 1989: The municipality of Cantley is detached from Gatineau.
  • 1993 : Masson changes its name for town of Masson-Angers
  • 2000: Bicentenary of the town of Hull and whose celebrations lasted 12 months.
  • January 1st 2002: The towns of Aylmer, Buckingham, Gatineau, Hull and Masson-Angers amalgamate to form the town of Gatineau .

Languages

The official language of the Quebec being the French, the population of Gatineau mainly remains French-speaking with approximately 87.6%. Had with the proximity of the town of Ottawa and thus of the Ontario, the city counts an important anglophone minority (of 10.1%). The Portuguese is the third language in importance (approximately 5,7%). The other spoken languages are immigrant languages such as the Arab , the Spanish , the German , the Italian , the Chinese, etc .

Federal

The federal policy with Gatineau was dominated a long time by the Liberal party of Canada, but with the last federal elections, the liberals were demolished in two of the three districts of the city.

Probably due to the proximity of the Canadian capital , the town of Gatineau is one of the most federalistic cities of the Quebec; with the referendum of 1995 NOT carried it with an average of 70,71%. The city is, so a liberal bastion since 1981. The Liberal party of Quebec in 2007 preserved the five seats of the city and obtained 45,4% of the popular vote, loser however seventeen points compared to 2003. ADQ with delighted the majority of the points to the liberals, having finished second in Pontiac and Chapleau by obtaining 22,9% of the votes in the city. The Left Québécois, finishes to him second in Hull, Gatineau and Papineau taking 22.3% of the voices.

During fusion in 2002, the new town of Gatineau decided to keep the old names of the cities and to divide the city into secteurs : sectors of Gatineau, Hull, Aylmer, Buckingham, and Masson-Angers, which are divided into district extremely different.

Gatineau (in green)

The sector of Gatineau is an especially residential and commercial sector. It is the most populated city with 129  676 inhabitants, is 45,4% of the population of the city. It gathers several shopping malls like the walks of Outaouais, the greatest shopping mall of the city.

Hull (in yellow)

The sector of Hull is, for a good part of its territory, the downtown area of Gatineau. Close to 40  000 people work the every day there. It is also in this sector where there are the most green areas (Parc of Gatineau). It is where the town hall of the city is. Hull is the oldest sector of the city; the first colonists settled there in 1800. It counts 83  484 inhabitants.

Aylmer (in red)

Aylmer is as a residential sector, though more cossu and more snuffed by people as Gatineau. There are as more green areas as in Gatineau. Many construction projects settled there these last years, especially since fusion, such as for example the Symmes Plate, in the north (before rural) of the old city. It counts 45  415 inhabitants.

Buckingham (out of orange)

The sector of Buckingham is the downtown area of the east of Gatineau. It is more commercial and is inhabited more than Masson-Anger. It counts 14  567 inhabitants.

Masson-Angers (in blue)

Masson-Anger is a very peaceful district, having a reputation of large village. The sector is the least populated city with only 12  282 inhabitants.
