Gaston Thorn
Gaston Egmont Thorn (born the September 3rd 1928 with Luxembourg and dead the August 26th 2007 with Luxembourg), was a politician Luxembourg which was Prime Minister of its country and chair European commission.
Biography
It is stopped by the occupant German during the Second world war and held in a camp of correction. He studies at the universities of Montpellier, Lausanne and Paris. He is lawyer at the bar of Luxembourg.
Political career
Mr. Thorn was appointed Democratic party (PD) with the Room to leave 1959, constantly re-elected since). He was president of PD since 1961.
He is mayor-assistant of the capital of the Grand Duchy of 1951 to 1963, member of the the European Parliament of 1959 to 1969.
In 1968, he becomes Foreign Minister and of the foreign trade, Minister for the Civil service, physical education and the sport. From 1977 to 1980, he is Minister for the Economic affairs.
He is then Prime Minister since May 1974 until 1979. With the head of a new coalition between the liberals and the Socialists, he is the only Luxembourg Prime Minister not to result from the social Christian group since the second world war. Whereas he is chief of the Government he completes important work: de-penalization of adultery, legalization of the divorce, abolition of the capital punishment, lowering of the majority at 18 years…
From 1981 to 1985, he is president of the European commission. Its candidature was not supported by France and Germany but by the United Kingdom. It is under the Thorn Commission that the British crisis (" I want that my money revienne" - Margaret Thatcher) is regulated, in favor of the the United Kingdom.
It also chaired the General meeting of the United Nations. There remains only Luxemburgish has to have chaired this organization.
Career in the economy
Gaston Thorn chaired the international Banque of Luxembourg (BIL) and the CLT (Luxembourg Company of Remote transmission) which will become RTL.
In 1991, it was one of the creators of the company Pan European Life, which was in the center of a scandal of money laundering.
