Biography
Graduate of the Institute of Art and Archeology and of the School of Louvre, Gaston Diehl created since 1935 with its school-fellows a student's group called " Renewal " in order to discuss with twice per month of comtemporaine creation with various artists in the basements of Capoulade to the Latin Quarter then, in 1939, with Montparnasse. Beginning 1938, it takes part in the weekly magazine " Marianne " and during one year a chronicle d´art called " holds; The platform of Jeunes".In October 1943, during the Occupation, Gaston Diehl founds the Salon from May in Paris, in a coffee of the place of the Palais Royal, in opposition to the ideology of the Nazisme and to its judgment of the degenerated Art, with the painters, sculptors or engravers Henri-Georges Adam, Emmanuel Auricoste, Lucien Coutaud, Robert Couturier, Jacques Despierre (which suggests naming the living room of the name of the month during which the first meetings were held), Marcel Gili, Leon Gischia, Francis Gruber , Jean Moal, Alfred Manessier, Andre Marchand, Edouard Pinion, Gustave Singier, Claude Venard and Roger Old man, which composes its management committee. Several of them (Coutaud, Gischia, Moal, Manessier, Merchant, Pinion, Singier) had in 1941 taken part in the exposure of the " Twenty young painters of French tradition ". The first Living room of May takes place to the gallery Pierre Maurs (3, avenue Matignon) of the May 29th to the June 29th 1945. The committee of honor joins together Germain Bazin, Jacques Dupont, Rene Huyghe, Bernard Dorival, Michel Florisoone, Pierre Ladoué and Marc Thiboutet. The legal council is the poet Jean Follain. The catalog of this first Living room is prefaced by Gaston Diehl, with texts of Rene Bertelé and André Roland de Renéville, poems of Jacques Prévert, Lucien Becker, André Frénaud, Jean Follain and Guillevic. Gaston Diehl will remain about it the president until in 1997.
He creates in October 1944 " the Movement of the Friends of Art " for the diffusion of the Modern art by the means of conferences, projections, films, didactic exposures particularly in province.
Very related on Rouault, and the young painters of French tradition of which it prefaces the exposures since 1943 to the Galerie of France, it also attends Bonnard, Matisse, Picasso, Villon, but also Braque, Bernard Buffet or Hans Hartung, and is thus, according to in particular the testimony of Pierre Restany (" Gaston Diehl, a man, a empreinte" , National Foundation of Graphic arts and Plastics, Paris, 2000), " very conscious of having at the same time a foot in first half of its century and another in the seconde".
In 1948, it creates the International festival of Film of Art and finishes the realization of films: Van Gogh (1948) then Gauguin (1950) with Alain Resnais and gallant Festivals (Watteau) (1950) with Jean Aurel.
In September 1950, it is named professor detached by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs with the Venezuela at the Central University of Caracas and at the School of Beautiful arts. Cultural attache near the embassy, it directs also the institute Free-Venezuelan, writes articles in the European and Latin-American presses. He thus makes know in Europe of the artists like Carlos Cruz-Díez or Jesús-Rafael Soto.
Of 1960 with 1966, it plays a part similar to the Morocco while following the traces of Delacroix and Matisse. Recalled by Andre Malraux in France in February 1966, it directs the Office of the Exposures of the Artistic action to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and assumes until its retirement in 1977 the task of the startup with the assistance of conservatives, critics and friends of the French exposures abroad like foreign exposures in France. Gaston Diehl continued until his death to support art in all his forms and in the world.
