The épinoches are osseous fish about the Gasterosteiformes and of the family of the Gasterosteidae. There are 16 species (certain authors recognize only 7 species) divided into 5 kinds.
Medium of life
The épinoches are fish of marine, brackish or soft water. The same species can include/understand individuals living in the three types of mediums. The marine individuals go up the rivers during the periods of reproduction, the latter being always carried out out of fresh water.
Reproduction
At the time of the abrasion, which is carried out March at July, the male of Gasterosteus aculeatus avoids bright colors (green back and red belly). It builds a nest starting from watery plants cemented by a substance produced by its kidneys. It practices a Parade where it exihbe its belly red in order to attract the female so that it lays in its nest, several hundreds of ovules which it fertilizes then. It supervises its nest, driving out all the intruders, to protect eggs or the young people.
Incubation lasts 4 to 10 days.
