Gassel

Gassel is a village Dutch in the North-East of the province of the Brabant-Septentrional on left bank of the Meuse. Gassel was an independent commune until in 1942, year of fastening to the old commune of Beers, formed of the localities Beers, Gassel and Linden. In 1994, Beers and Linden are attached to the commune of Cuijk and Gassel with the commune of Grave. The January 2007, Gassel counts 1.169 inhabitants.

History

Gassel is an agricultural village in old the seignieurie of Cuijk, of which it shares the history. The village is built on a donk , hillock of sand between marshes. The farms occupy the sides of the hillock and the fields are in bottom around. In the center of the hillock is the neo-gothic church Saint Jean Baptiste of 1877, who replaced a former church. A second habitat, Nieuw-Gassel was formed later. By contrast, the center around the church is called Old man-Gassel .

Outfall of Beers

Gassel is located between two dams: in north that of the Meuse and in the south that of the Beerse Overlaat , Outfall of Beers . This outfall is a low quay of the Meuse set up in 1922 between Linden and Gassel. It was a security measure to regularize the frequent floods of left bank of the Meuse. The outfall deviated in times of raw the overflow of the Meuse towards the floodplain of the Maaskant to join the Meuse with the height of Wood-the-Duke. The Déversoir of Beers is closed in 1942. Currently, one studies the possibility of a reinstalment of the outfall.

Tongelaar castle

Tongelaar is a medieval field pertaining to the lords of Cuijk. In 1282, Jean I of Cuijk yielded the field to Florent V, Count de Hollande. The feudal Motte of the 9th century is replaced at the 15th century by the current castle. At the end of the 18th century a wing is added in the shape of farm.

Bergzicht mill

Gassel has a very beautiful octagonal mill on foot of stone, the walls and the covered roof of thatch. The mill goes back to 1808; it was burned in 1814 by French during the seat of Grave and it is rebuilt in 1817. The mill is always used for to grind all kinds of corn. With 25 m of span of the wings, it is the largest mill in the Pays of Cuijk.
