Leonard Gary Oldman (born the March 21st 1958 with London) is an actor and British realizer .
Its career of actor
Gary returns in the rows and is registered with the Britain' S Pink Brudford College. Thanks to the purse which the school will grant to him, it will be able to follow the courses without the financial aid of his mother until obtaining the theatrical diploma in 1979. Encouraged by its professors, Gary Oldman founds the small troop of the " Greenwich Young People' S Theater " thanks to which it will gain a certain reputation which will enable him to integrate prestigious the " Royal Shakespeare Company " in 1984. Excellent in a traditional repertory, the young hope of the English theater acquires a total recognition near the profession and of the public, doubled several rewards (of which the price of the Best Actor in 1985). But squeakings of the boards and the felted odor of the rooms victoriennes of the capital are well too fixed for this actor with the dispersed temperament.
Its career of actor
The cinema becomes its main objective, it profits already from several experiments in front of the camera. In 1981, it had obtained a small role in “Remembrance” and two telefilms, “Meantime " , of Mike Leigh and in " Honest, Decent and True " of Blair in 1985. In 1986, of casting in casting, he manages to take down its first great role, determining for the remainder of his career and his approach of the characters whom he will interpret later: he incarnates Sid Vicious, bass player junkie of the group Sex Pistols, in Sid and Nancy of Alex Cox. This singular and extreme character, two qualifiers which will stick to him, that he plays with accuracy will make it possible Gary Oldman to climb the steps of success. It obtains for this film Evening Standard Film Award ace Best Newcomer (the Young most promising hope). From its physique sharpened like a blade, its piercing glance, and its impulsiveness (" the dog fou" as Martin Campbell calls it), Oldman is ideal to incarnate the " méchants" or characters except standards, even if it is only one of the facets of its immense repertory. In 1988, Stephen Frears offers to him the role of the playwright Joe Orton, famous for its subjects with scandal, in Prick Up Your Ears. But until 1991, Gary Oldman will be with the poster of several films without success, for the majority of the thrillers (“Track 29”, of Nicolas Roeg, or “Criminal law” of Martin Campbell). There remains marginal. It is in 1991 qu ' Oliver Stone proposes to him to play the part of Lee Harvey Oswald, the supposed assassin of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, at the sides of Kevin Costner in “JFK”. This difficult role which excavates in the painful history of America will be worth him finally a total credibility and the favors of largest. It is Francis Ford Coppola which will assoira its reputation the following year by entrusting the role to him titrates in the baroque “Dracula”. The cruel and tormented character of the count Dracula was intended for the actor who crosses throughout film various states, various faces to which it gives life with an incredible imposing presence and a charisma. One finds it into 1993 at the sides of Christian Slater in “True Romance” (Tony Scott) and in 1994 pennies the direction of Luc Besson in “Leon”. By incarnating Stansfield, the cop sadistic, cocainoman and corrupted which tracks Jean Reno (with the first steps of its American career), Gary Oldman délecte with a visible pleasure of the most violent role that one allowed him to play. Besson was not mistaken there since it again called upon its " sévices" in 1997 to interpret malicious Zorg in “the Fifth element”. Oldman loves these characters of malicious who bring the possibility to him of letting speak his impulses and this " folie" brilliant which lives it, all in all, its alarming and attractive play. It is this type of role which he seeks by playing the guard who martyrise Kevin Bacon in “Meurtre in Alcatraz”, the Russian terrorist who hijacks the plane of the US president in the very patriotic “Air Force One”, of Wolfgang Petersen, or the criminal in escape in “Lost in Space”. Its faculty to change skin also confers more interior and more significant roles to him, by interpreting Ludwig Van Beethoven in film of the same name (realized by Bernard Pink in 1994) or the artist Albert Milo in “Basquiat” of Julian Schnabel in 1996.
Without to have reached the limits of its performances in front of the camera, the desire to pass behind was formulated in 1997 since he wrote and carried out “not to swallow”, that he presents to Cannes the same year. It is a realistic film and without concessions, which evokes its memories of childhood while plunging us in the poor district of London where it grew. By-product by Luc Besson, not to swallow depicts the daily life of a family torn by violence, alcohol and drug, without never falling into the pessimism. Inspired by the work of Ken Loach, Mike Leigh or Frears, Gary Oldman signs a first touching and intense film there.
To begin the millenium, it was immersed in the role of the billionaire disfigured Mason Verger in “Hannibal”, Gary Oldman finds the kind of role that it so much affectionate since in “Manipulations” (“The contender”) of Rod Lurie, it plays a jealous deputy and misogynist ready with all. He plays Sirius Black, the godfather of Harry Potter, in “Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban” (2004), “Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire” (2005) and “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” (2007). In 2005, he endorses the role of James Gordon, the police superintendent of Gotham City, in “Batman Begins” (2005) and in “The Dark Knight” (2008).
