Gary Cooper , of its true name Frank James Cooper, is an American actor, born the May 7th 1901, with Helena, Montana. Untiring worker, it began his career in the Twenties and turned in forty years in more than one hundred of films with the largest realizers of the Hollywood traditional time: Ernst Lubitsch, Frank Capra, Otto Preminger, Raoul Walsh, Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, William Wyler, King Vidor,…. It was named five times at the Oscars and gained twice the statuette of the best actor. It is known for its interpretation all in reserve, and its physical presence (1m91) which often were worth to him to interpret roles of not very eloquent cow-boys. But it also shone in the light and sentimental comedy as in the Eighth Woman of Bore-Blue , Sérénade to three or ARIANE .
He died the May 13rd 1961 with Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, (the United States), continuations of a cancer of the prostate.
Childhood
Born Frank James Cooper with Helena, Montana, from Charles Henry Cooper (judge at the supreme court, of British origin), and from Alice Cooper, Gary Cooper passes its childhood to Dunstable to the the United Kingdom with his/her mother and her Arthur older brother Roy. It makes its primary studies in Dunstable Grammar School between 1910 and 1913. Whereas it is 13 years old, an car accident obliges it to take rest. It leaves to join his father who has a ranch of cattle to the Montana. It is there that he learns how to ride a horse; it also meets there a 10 year old neighbor intended to become famous: Myrna Loy . It obtains its diploma of Grinnell College (Iowa) in 1922.
Hollywood
In 1923, Gary Cooper moves with Los Angeles in the idea to earn its living while working as draftsman for publicity. After 3 months of failure, it starts to work like appear for the cinema, in particular thanks to its talent of rider. In 1939, it is the first choice of David O. Selznick to interpret the role of Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind . He would have said by refusing the role: “This film will be the largest failure of the history of the cinema. I am content that it is Clark Gable which is caught a mess tin and not me” . In 1940, it becomes acquainted with Ernest Hemingway; the two men start a friendship which will last until death. Here how Hemingway describes Gary Cooper with its editor Maxwell Perkins: “Coop is a man well; as honest, right, pleasant and integrates as it appears it. If one invented a character like Coop, nobody would believe in it. It is just too well to be true” . Alfred Hitchcock proposes the main roles of to him Corresponding 17 (1940) and Fifth column (1942) which it also refuses. He will admit later to have made an error. In 1941, it gains its first Oscar for Sergent York . In 1952, it obtains from it a second for the role of Marshall Will Kane in the train will whistle three times , regarded by much as its best role.
