Garrotxa

The Garrotxa is an administrative area Spanish pre the Catalan Pyrenees . It is next to the Spanish areas of the Ripollès, of the Osona, the Selva, the Gironès, the Pla of Estany and the Alt Empordà. It is frontier Vallespir French, left the department of the the Eastern Pyrenees.

Garrotxa extends on a surface from 735,4 km ² and its population reaches them: 51786 inhabitants. It includes/understands the high basin of the river Fluvià and the sources of the Muga, the Land-mark and the Llémena.

Geography

The territory is not homogeneous and can be divided, as well under the angle of the relief as of the settlement, in two distinct entities:

The area which extends to north from the valley from Fluvià calls High Garrotxa and the southernmost part known occupies under the common name of comarque of Olot .

In the Western area or cubeta of Olot-Sant Pau , the presence of materials ic Volcan contributes to the strong particularism of the landscape. The forms which are noticed more are the volcanic cones, approximately forty, among which the Croscat and the Volcan are distinguished from Santa Margarida.

Fluvià, of mode the Mediterranean N, has a rather low flow (1,07 m3/s with Olot).

Garrotxa contrasts with the close areas by its raised moisture, annual precipitations oscillating around: 1000 Misters There exists a Catalan Dicton which says that If No plou has Olot, No plou enlloc (if it does not rain in Olot, it does not rain nowhere elsewhere).

As for the temperatures (in Olot), the minimum was recorded in January with 0,09°C and the in August maximum with 27,7°C. The many existing basins cause thermal invertions. Moreover, the relief of High Garrotxa, in particular with the Puigsacalm , knows a climate of mountain with important precipitations of Neige.

The vegetation is adapted to the climate. A part is of Mediterranean type and extends in High Garrotxa and to the east from the area. The remainder of the territory is covered with a vegetation subméditerranéenne, even of type Atlantique in the wettest places.

Population and economic activity

The zones with strong settlement are not very important. In 1986,9,4% of the active population worked in the Primary sector, 59,4% in the Secondary industry and the 31,2% remainders in the Tertiary sector.

The surface cultivated decreased with the wire of time. Nevertheless, Garrotxa is the first producing area of Maïs not irrigated Catalogne.

The Bétail is in strong expansion thanks to the modernization of agriculture, in particular for the porcine breeding and bovine.

The Industrie had a decisive projection after 1940. Currently, the sectors Textile (in particular spinning mills and the industry of the mesh), food (industry of the meat) and metallurgical (metallurgy of transformation), are most important. Second-rate the sectors come from the Graphic arts and impression, the Chimie and the plastic S. the industrial activity concentrates in the town of Olot and on the common neighbors of Sant Joan the Font and Besalú.
