The garrot in eye of gold ( Bucephala clangula ) is a plunger Canard of the family of the Anatidé S.
Description
It is a Canard from 38 to 43 cm length with a scale from 63 to 75 cm, heavy between 500 and: 1200 G (clear difference between the male and the female, respectively 700-: 1200 against 500-800).It is squat with a triangular famous person and a small nozzle. The male with the black head with metal reflections green and a round and white spot between the nozzle and the eye which is yellow, at the origin of its name. The back and the back are black and all the remainder of the body is white. In eclipse, the plumage is similar to that of the female.
The female has a head brown chocolate, a collar and the chest blanchâtre. The remainder of the body is gray-brown.
In flight, male and female have a white spot on the wings.
Surface of distribution
In Europe, it niche in the septentrional forests of Scandinavia and the north of the Russia. One finds it in Asia until the Kamtchatka. It is a Migrateur, it winters in the South in a very dispersed way. One will find it with the Denmark, on the southern part of the the North Sea and the north of the Manche, in England and Ireland on the one hand, on the Mediterranean coast, north-eastern part, Adriatic Sea, Greece and Black Sea on the other hand. One will also find it in the stretches of water of the alpine massive , in Suisse and France and along the the Rhone until in the Camargue.
Habitat
The garrot in eye of gold attends the lakes or the rivers of certain importance and also brackish or salted water edges of coasts, estuaries and arm of the sea. One finds it of larger number on the seaside, food being more abundant there.
Behavior
It is a bird less gregarious than the others plunger ducks, it is rather savage. One can rather often only see it or in couple. Attending same water as the Fuligule S, they do not mingle with them and remain with the variation.
Food mode
It is an excellent plunger, the diving on average from 25 to 35 seconds can go up to 55 seconds. Depth varying between 1 and 7 meters. They are rather carnivorous, molluscs, small crustacean, insects, larvae, towards and small fish. They can eat algae, buds, growths and watery seeds of plants but to a lesser extent.
Reproduction
The female lays one brooded per annum from 8 to 11 eggs of at the end of March at June. The nest is in a hole of tree or an old nest of black Pic. The cavity is furnished with sleeping bag of the female. It can be between 2,5 and 5 meters in height, sometimes enough far from water. The garrot is faithful to the site of nesting.
