Garmin
Garmin is an American company specialized in the navigation systems by GPS.
The company Garmin Corporation was created in October 1989 by two American engineers, Min H. Kao and Gary Burrell, which had developed systems of positioning by satellites for aviation and the army. Baptized in the ProNav beginning, the company is re-elected in 1991 “Garmin”, a combination of the first names of the two associated ones (Gary and Min) following threats with lawsuit with the NavPro company.
The first product of the company, a Receiving GPS intended for the market of the marine launched in 1990, records more than 5.000 orders in spite of its price of 2.500 dollars. The two engineers imagine a portable receiver GPS then: it will be used by the American army at the time of the war of the Gulf in 1991. But they are navigators GPS intended for the hikers who will contribute, as from the years 2000, to ensure the reputation of Garmin. Its model Foretrex, first of the kind to being able to be carried with the wrist, will be a great success in the fields of the bicycle touring and the pleasure sailing. It will be followed by the series eTrex, which remained a long time without competition.
With the democratization of GPS, Garmin was directed towards the market of the navigation systems for car with its StreetPilot range, then more recently with its Nüvi range. It also launched a model for motorcyclists, Zūmo. Garmin has also a division specialized in the equipment for aviation and markets a range of Sonar S for the navy.
In 2003, Gary Burrell left its post of chairman, leaving the reins of the company to its associate Min Kao. In 2006, Garmin repurchased the company EME tce, which distributed its products in France, and which became Garmin France.
