Gargenville

Gargenville is a commune of the department of the Yvelines and area Île-de-France. It is a small town located along the the Seine, to 45 km in the west of Paris. With the common neighbor of Issou, it forms an agglomeration of 10.000 inhabitants approximately.

The origin of its name would be attached to the Gallic root garg , water.

The inhabitants are called Gargenvillois.

Geography

This territory is limited to the east by the commune of Juziers, in south-east by the commune of Aubergenville-Élisabethville, in the south by the commune of Épône, in south-east by the commune of the Wall-on-Seine, in the west by the commune of Issou, in the North-West by the commune of Guitrancourt and in north by the commune of Brueil-in-Vexin. It includes the island of Rangiport.

The commune with the crossing of the secondary roads D190, directed East-West connecting Poissy and Limay, and D130, is directed North-South, which comes from Brueil-in-Vexin and joined Épône and the highway A13 by the bridges from Rangiport. It is served also by a station of the railway line Paris-Saint-Lazare - Mantes-the-Pretty by Conflans-Holy-Honorine and Meulan.

History

Before the revolution, Gargenville consisted of two strongholds, the field of Hanneucourt and that of Pulley block of Tilery. In 1790, they are joined together and form the new municipality, which counts 990 inhabitants then.

  • 1921 : startup of the Cement factory of Gargenville (at the origin, exploitation of chalk of the career of Juziers).

  • 1965: construction of the underground connection between the cement factory and the career of Guitrancourt, brought into service on July 31st, 1966.
  • 1967: construction of the Refinery of Gargenville (brought into service in July 1968 under the name of refinery of Vexin).
  • 1983: stop of the activities of crude refining to the refinery Elf which becomes a deposit of Hydrocarbure S.
  • (*) 2004: following the death, on September 10th, 2004, of Andre Samitier, mayor of Gargenville for several decades and deputy of the district, of the municipal elections and legislative (8th district of Yvelines) have been organized and a new mayor (Mrs. Nicole Delpeuch) was elected. Nicole Delpeuch, her assistant parliamentary succeeds to him the post of mayor.

Economy

Gargenville is an industrial small town, with in particular a cement factory and an oil terminal in edge of the Seine (old oil refinery).

The cement factory, which belongs to the group Calcia (Ital Cementi Group), is most important of France (2 million tons per annum). It is supplied in Calcaire by the career of Guitrancourt by means of a Conveying with band installed in an underground gallery of 2410 m which passes under the city and the Railway. The flow of this installation is 4000 tons/day. Cement forwardings in bulk are done either by Camion S, or by the waterway, the factory being in edge of the Seine. This factory belongs to the sites authorized in 2003 to burn animal flours (15 000 tons per annum).

The deposit of Hydrocarbure S liquids (site classified as “Seveso”) has 24 tanks for a full capacity of 700  000 m ³ and store crude oil and various refined products. In addition to storage, the site ensures the production of Carburéacteur for the Parisian airports, starting from the kerosene. This site is also charged to ensure the exploitation of the Oléoduc which connects the Raffinerie S of the Havre and of Grandpuits (Seine-et-Marne).

The companies Elf-Antar France, Totalgaz, Butagaz and Mobil exploit jointly a storage of Gaz called Géovexin. It is an underground installation, dug in chalk to 140 m of depth, of a capacity of 130.000 m ³.
