Garden of the king
The Jardin of the king is one of oldest French official scientific organizations the since it is created in 1635, one century after the royal Collège (1530) but before the Academy of Science (1666) and the Observatoire of Paris (1672).
History
It is as of 1633 that Guy of the Brush by his insistence near Louis XIII, and thanks to the support of Jean Héroard and Richelieu, obtains the creation of a Botanical garden with medical vocation with Paris. The king acquires a ground in the suburbs and the Brush begins the first work and sowings. But the Edict which founds it is published only in 1635 and the garden is officially inaugurated only in 1640 under the name of royal Jardin of the medicinal plants .The project causes many oppositions in particular on behalf of the medical college of the Université of Paris which sees there a competitor with its own teaching. The more so as the courses are opened with all and are given not in Latin but in French. It is not the only innovation: certain subjects, like the blood circulation, are taught there whereas they are still criticized by faculty. Teachers come from the Université of Montpellier, large rival of the University of Paris. For appaiser a little the tensions, Louis XIII decides to authorize teaching but does not allow the Garden to exempt diplomas there. The Garden does not count, with the Revolution, that three posts of professor: botany, anatomy and chemistry.
The garden will know one period of decline, Colbert takes in hand the administration of the Garden and the botanist Fagon ensures a great scientific success to him, being surrounded of a brilliant team, in whom appear Christophe Glaser, Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, etc In 1718, the royal Jardin of the medicinal plants becomes the royal Jardin of the plants .
Buffon is named intendant of the garden in 1739 and the fact of largely increasing and reigns as a Master on the spot during 41 years. At the time of the French revolution it becomes the Botanical garden
