Garden of altitude of Haut-Chitelet

The garden of altitude of Haut-Chitelet , perched between 1210 m and 1228 m in the Massive of the Vosges, presents more than 2500 species of the cold or mountainous areas of the world. It depends on the Botanical garden of Montet of Villers-the-Nancy. It is labélisé “  remarkable Garden   ”.

History

In 1903, Camille Brunotte, professor with the faculty of Nancy, creates with the alpine Club French a garden of altitude to the farm of Montabey on ubac of the Col of Schlucht. Passing from 120 species in 1904 to 800 in 1914, this first garden is unfortunately destroyed at the time of the First World War.

In 1954, the National office of the forests makes gift of a ground of 11 hectares at the University of Nancy to take again the work of professor Brunotte. Located one kilometer more at the south, on the territory of Xonrupt-Longemer, this ground offers the same climatic conditions which the precedent with the advantage of not competing with the practice of the ski. Broad a Tourbière adds a considerable interest to it. The first work is undertaken carried out only starting from 1966 and the opening to the public goes back to 1970.

Local climate

Haut-Chitelet is a place exposed to the rigors of the Vosgean climate, offering a annual Pluviométrie of 2500 mm, with possibility of Neige from October to May, and an average temperature of 3,5°C. These conditions are those which one meets to 2000 m in the the Alps or with the sea level in Iceland and Norway. The nature of the acid ground (pH 4 to 5) contributes to the roughness of the conditions.

The garden

The field to be visited occupies 1,5 hectare. The plants are grouped by area, the flora Vosgean and alpine are best represented and distributed by ecological affinities, but from others come from the mountains of America, of the Japan, China, the the Himalayas, the the Caucasus, the Siberia and the New Zealand.
