The gardénias are plants of the Gardenia , a kind which includes/understands approximately 250 S of plants with flowers of Rubiacées, originating in the tropical areas to subtropical of Africa, of South Asia, Australasia and Oceania.

Description

They are shrubs and small trees sempervirents, from 1 to 15 meters in height. The opposite Sheet S or in verticils of 3 or 4, by 3-25 cm broad, green dark, 5-50 cm length are glossed and coriaces. The Fleur S are solitary or in small groups, white or pale yellow. The Corolle at tubulous base is divided into 5 to 12 lobes and measurement from 5 to 12 cm in diameter. Flowering takes place of semi-spring with semi-be, and several species have very odorous flowers.

Culture and use

The gardénias are snuffed for their beautiful flowers with the sweetened perfume, very large at certain species. They have the reputation to be difficult to cultivate. Originating in the tropical areas, they need a water content raised to open out. They require also an acid ground and drained well. Composts of potting especially designed for the gardénias are available on the market.

With the Japan and in China, the species Gardenia augusta is called Kuchinashi (梔子). One extracts from the flowers a yellow Teinture used to dye clothing like like food Colorant.
