Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo is the author of the modern version of the Tale of chivalry Amadis de Gaulle , written in three books at the 14th century by an unknown author. Montalvo added a fourth book and also wrote a continuation Las Sergas de Esplandián (exploits of Esplandian) (the oldest known edition goes up with 1510) in which he tells the life of the oldest son of Amadis. The Saga was continued then with “ Florisando ” (of Ruiz Paez de Ribera, 1510), then with “ Lisuarte of Greece ” (by Feliciando de Silva, 1514), “ Lisuarte of Greece ” (by Juan Diaz, 1525), “ Amadis of Greece ” (by Feliciano de Silva, 1530) etcIn Las Sergas de Esplandián Rodríguez as follows describes mythical a Île of California:
Knows that with right hand of the the Indies there is an island called California very close to the edge of the terrestrial paradise; it is populated black women, without any man among them, because they live the made-to-order of the Amazones.
The novel influenced much Hernán the Cortes and other explorers in their desire to discover this island, which they thought of finding along the Western coast of the North America. In 1539, Francisco de Ulloa, sailing for the account of the Cortes, explored the Golfe of California and the coast of the Péninsule of Low-California determinant which it was indeed a Péninsule and not of a island. In spite of that, the erroneous cartographic design persisted on many European charts until the 18th century.
