García Guerra

Brother García Guerra (C. 1547, Fromesta, Palencia, Spain - February 22nd 1612, Mexico City), Archbishop of Mexico City and Viceroy of News-Spain. He is archbishop of Mexico City since the December 3rd 1607 then archbishop and Vice-roi since the June 19th 1611 until his death in 1612.

He enters the orders to the monastery of the Dominicain S of San Pablo of Valladolid, where he becomes higher prior then of the province. The October 29th 1607 Philippe III appoints it archbishop of Mexico City.

In 1611 a letter from Spain arrives at Mexico City ordering to the Viceroy, Luis of Velasco to return in the motherland to deal with the Conseil of the Indies, and in García Guerra to replace the Viceroy. The letter stipulates that Velasco remains in load of the government of News-Spain until its departure. Velasco leaves Mexico City on June 10th and the Guerra archbishop withdraws himself with Tacubaya to await there the news of his loading with Veracruz.

The news arrives on June 18th and the day following Guerra makes its solemn entry in the capital. It is assembled on an impetuous standard under a baldachin carried by advised city, with feet and vêtus of velvet crimson. To accompany the archbishop one finds the members of the Audiencia and courts, the official ones of the kingdom, the noble ones and the richest residents of the colony. The proceession stops initially with the cathedral, where solemn a Te Deum is sung, then arrives at the viceregal palate, where Guerra takes officially its functions.

Like viceroy, it tries to raise funds to improve the system of drainage of Mexico City and to convince the Spanish colonists to return terrres to the Indians. Its primary goal is a failure. It receives a scientific report/ratio of the famous mathematician Ildefonso Arias indicating that the project cannot succeed because of the narrow liason of the basement with the Río Acolhuacán. Its second objective is hardly more profitable, because of its little of experiment as a viceroy and of the strong opposition of the owners of the Encomienda S and the Latifundio S.

The August 10th 1611 an earthquake causes important damage in the capital and some damage in the provinces.

To be become shortly after viceroy, Guerra was wounded while going down from sound fits with body. It undergoes an operation without success and dies in 1612. It is buried in large pump in the cathedral of Mexico City. After its death, Audiencia assumes the government while waiting for the arrival of sonremplaçant. A few days after Audiencia in failure a conspiracy of Negros puts, during twenty-nine men and four women.
