History
The history of the commune is strongly related to that of the family of Viry. The current branch of Viry goes back to the 12th century and is a branch junior by the family of Sallenoves. Initially barons, De Viry becomes Count S at the 16th century following the services rendered by their Marin ancestor. The characteristic of this title is due to the fact that the duke of Savoy names Marin count and after him all its male or female direct descendants. Thus, all the descendants of Sailor and not the only elder ones of the family can claim with the title, which is very original. In addition, one their descendants is with the the Pantheon.Others noble families have their origins in the commune, in particular with Humilly where the future King of the Morocco returns visit at the time of the Société of the Nations to some of his/her friends.
The commune is also known for its fort Sainte Catherine built by the duke of Savoy to attack Geneva: it however will be entirely destroyed by French Geneva and its allies. Henri IV remained at the village of Eluiset in December 1600 and a table, painted at the 19th century and exposed to the Mairie, points out this event. The current church of the village is rebuilt in 1843.
The January 29th 1910, the brothers Armand and Henri Dufaux found the company of the aerodrome of Viry which will become famous for its air meetings (1910, 1911 and 1935). During the Second world war, Viry is one of the common borders where passes many Juif S fleeing the Nazisme.
