Gankutsuou

Gankutsuō (巌窟王) is televised series of animation of twenty-four 25 minutes episodes. Realized by Mahiro Maeda at Gonzo Digimation, it is an animated adaptation of the Count of Assembles-Cristo of Alexandre Dumas. The adaptation of the original history proceeds in a techno-futuristic universe, which makes of Gankutsuō a work original and innovating.

Short summary of the history

Albert de Morcerf, young Viscount, is the friend of Franz d' Épinay with whom it visits the Luna planet, where they attend an opera. Whereas the piece of music finishes, a strange character offers a bouquet of flower to the singer: its long gray hair falls on its shoulders, its stature is imposing, its gold cane, its clothing richly decorated and its service indicate an obvious nobility and an importance. It is about the count of Monte Cristo. The most insane rumors circulate about it. But more mysterious still, at the time of his meeting with Albert, the count proposes with this last and his friend an invitation with dining. He requests Albert to present the noble ones of Paris to him, city which is unknown for him.

As the friendship between Albert and the count grow, Franz is wary more and more of this last, and the history explains slowly how its suspicions could be founded.
