The name of the group refers to a Chinese faction communist, the Bande of the Four (literally: gang off furnace ), repressed and brought in front of the courts after the death of Mao Zedong, is exactly at the time where the British group was active. They will be inspired by a voyage of students to the the United States, whereas they see in concert Television and The Ramones with mythical CBGB of New York.

Vindicatory and politicized, the music of Gang off Furnace succeeds the punk rock'n'roll and introduces elements Funk, which gives a mixture of punk-rock'n'roll rate/rhythm, even “dansable”. Their musical relevance within the movement Punk and punk Post is considerable, in spite of a business success rather limited.

Gang off Furnace places in the British Top 40 the part At Home He' S.A. Tourist . Invited to off take part in the popular emission Signal the Pops on the waves of BBC, the group refuses to make a light modification to the words of the song. It had been asked to them to substitute packets for rubbers . The obstinacy of the quartet causes the dissatisfaction with their recording company, EMI, which will in the future concentrate its efforts on another of its protected, Duran Duran.

A second album, Solid Gold , appears in 1981, but does not allow Gang off Furnace to continue on the impetus of Entertainment! . Certain problems occur, and free Dave Allen to form Shriekback. It is replaced by Sara Lee.

The third album leaves in 1982, and makes run much ink, in particular because of the title I Coils has Man in has Uniform which makes scandal and is interdict on the waves of BBC, into full Guerre with the Falklands.

It is initially a round in England which gives the group to the foreground. But it is especially the exit in 2005 of Return the Gift which again will propel Gang off Furnace in the topicality. This double album reconsiders their successes of the Années 1980. Second Cd consists of remix and innovations.

Influence

Like the Velvet Underground one decade earlier, the influence of Gang off Furnace goes far beyond its real business success. Gang off Furnace had an undeniable influence on several groups of the decade 2000, like Bloc Party, Radio 4, The Rapture or Franz Ferdinand. The uncontrolled guitar of Andy Gill will have preceded the pop noisy the use of the distortion is not foreign with the sound of Nirvana or Mission off Burma. The play of guitar of Gill will have inspired that of The Edge group U2,

As for the low one of Dave Allen, it is with the base of fusion between Rock and Funk. The bass player Michael “Flea” Balzary of the Red Hot Chili Peppers already gave a report on the influence that Gang off Furnace had on itself and its group. However, collaboration between Andy Gill and Red Hot Chili Peppers for the recording of the first album very badly occurred so much so that years later the RHCP would leave in the trade the demonstrations this album, the sound being closer, according to them, of what they would have liked. Indeed, the RHCP wanted a sound direct and without frioritures while Andy Gill privileged the use of modern effects.

Gang off Furnace also innovated by publishing many Remix are their parts, on different simple, a rather new gesture on behalf of a formation claiming punk-rock'n'roll.

The members of Gang off Furnace had a severe glance on the artists who succeeded to them, criticizing them to have been unaware of the aspect politicized their compositions to keep only the musical aspect of it. Certain groups, like Fugazi or Minutemen, however took again the two facets of the British quartet.
