It was called besides the “Pirate with the Silk Veils” since it equipped his boats with veils made of silks imported. However, it ends up giving up this life of excess and wandering and went to offer its services to Liu Biao, which refused to take it with its tumultuous past.

It thus went to serve Huang Zu during a few years and it fought Sun Quan at the time of its first offensive on Xiakou where it killed Ling CAD. However, the talents of Gan Ning were not rewarded by Huang Zu and in year 207, helped of Known Fei, it crossed the Long River to go to serve Sun Quan. As of its entered in service at Sun Quan, Gan Ning proposed to once more attack Huang Zu in Xiakou. Its proposal having been accepted, it was dissociated largely at the time of the attack, which made it possible the forces of Sun Quan to demolish the enemy one. He also managed to kill Huang Zu and after the engagements, he convainquit Sun Quan not to carry out Su Fei. It was then charged to keep Xiakou.

A little later it directed the avant-garde at the time of the naval battle to the Three Rivers and overcame the forces of CAD CAD, thus gaining the control of the sea route. He also played an important role at the time of the battle of Chi Bi whereas he penetrated the enemy lines and set fire to the central camp of CAD CAD. He assisted then Zhou Yu at the time of the attacks on the possessions of CAD CAD in the province of Jing. He was victorious in particular by conquering Yiling and by driving out CAD Ren towards north. Sun Quan rewarded its successes by naming it Grand Administrator for Xiling.

In year 214, whereas the forces of the South moved on Hefei, Gan Ning managed to take the town of Huancheng by climbing the ramparts of the city using a chain. However, they were diverted by Zhang Liao when they advanced on Hefei and had to turn over to Ruxu. A little later in year 217, at the time of the battle of Ruxu, it saved the life with Ling Tong, which since many years hated it to have killed his/her father and put thus fine at their competition.
