Gambit elephant
The gambit elephant (also called counter-gambit of the pawn rams or counter-attack Englund ) or gambit Maroczy is a seldom played Ouverture of failures starting with the blows (in algebraic notation):
-
1. e4 e5
- 2. Cf3 d5?!
In this gambit, the Blacks are unaware of the attack of their pawn E and try to immediately take the initiative on the White. This beginning is generally regarded as doubtful, because if the White play precisely, the Blacks do not have compensations sufficient for the sacrificed pawn. The continuation could be 3. exd5 e4 4. De2 Cf6 5. d3 Dxd5 6. Cbd2 Fe7 7. dxe4 De6 and the White remains with a pawn moreover, although the development of the Blacks is without problems. A calmer continuation for the Blacks is to continue by 3… Fd6 and to maintain their pawn in e5 while continuing quickly by… Cf6 and… 0-0.
Its Code ECO is C40.
