Gambetta (subway of Paris)

Gambetta is a station of the lines 3 and 3bis of the Métro of Paris; it is located in the 20 {{E}} district of Paris.

The station

Situation

It is located around the Place Gambetta, under the Avenue Gambetta in the west and the North-East.

Origin of the name

Comes from the Gambetta place, which owes its name with Leon Gambetta, French politician.

History

The station is open the January 25th 1905 as terminus of line 3. It is located at the North-East of the place, on a loop which makes it tower of the town hall of 20th, by the streets Belgrand and of China.

The November 27th 1921, the line is prolonged until carries Lilacs; the Gambetta station becomes station of passage.

The March 27th 1971, line 3 is prolonged towards Gallieni. On this occasion, the Gambetta branch - Door of the Lilacs becomes the line 3bis; the station, located at the North-East of the place, becomes the terminus (compound of two ways in dead end framing a central quay) this new shuttle.

A new station is open on the ways of line 3, in the west of the place; its proximity with the station Martin Nadaud leads to the removal of the latter, which does not disappear completely: the western accesses of the new station pass by the old quays.

The correspondence enters the quays of the two lines is done by a broad corridor made up of the old tunnel of line 3.

The tunnel of the loop of the terminus of origin of line 3 is used as junction of service between the two lines.
