Galupe
The galupe is an old boat of Adour.
Presentation
Built in Oak, the galupes measured between fifteen and twenty meters length on 4,5 m broad and carried up to seventy tons of goods. Boat S flat-bottomed, from weak Draft and provided as a Rudder with a long oar placed in Scull, they descended the river while being helped of the current and went up it with towing.
The descent in three days of the Midouze and the Adour since Mount-with-Marsan, easy and not very expensive, was carried out via Tartas and Dax until the Port of Bayonne. The increase was more complicated: drawn “with cordelle” since the tow path by oxen, the boat required sometimes enormous Aviron S.
It is not impossible that the word is same origin as " launch " and " sloop ".
